When I say that I have a good circular saw, a good fountain pen, and a good home security system, or when I praise a golfer for a good putt, what does all that have in common with the exclamation from the football fans? What job is good doing in all these contexts? What sort of fact is it being used to state?
According to Aristotle, something is good when it successfully hits the target for which it was intended. A good pass from Joe Montana made it into the receiver's hands. A good putt went into the hole. A good saw cuts wood efficiently.
A good home security system warns of intruders in every possible way, and either frightens off those bold and crazy enough to persist, or else leads to their apprehension.

In every case, the good thing does successfully what it was intended to do. It hits the target, serves its purpose, fulfills its mission. It has a function, and carries it out well. Using the Greek term for an archery bullseye, telos, we can call this The Teleological Conception of Good.
The history of ethics is in many ways an attempt to answer the question "What makes a human being a good person?

Ways to Remember Numbers
Unfortunately, number sequences are becoming an increasing part of our daily lives, with repeated requirements for security codes for bank accounts, credit cards, and home security systems. One of the ways that people try to get around this is to use numbers that are meaningful, such as birthdays or anniversaries for the base of the number sequence. However, security companies recommend that you not use such numbers because they are easy for a third party to discover.

Heading Off Trigger-Happy Headaches
It's quitting time—and not a second too soon. The boss rode you all week about the Dinkman project, and your brain is aching from the abuse.

Ask your police or sherifFs department to send an officer to the meeting, to offer tips on home security, self-protection, and what to report to police.
At the meeting, exchange work schedules, home and business telephone numbers, and addresses. Keep these near your telephone so you can use them if you need to report a crime.
Choose one person or several individuals who are at home during the day to be responsible for crime-watch activities. Then make arrangements to watch each other's houses and properties and to be on the lookout for suspicious activities or persons.
A good wireless system has the following features:
Immunity from radio interference: As much as 92 percent of all alarms triggered by home security systems are false. Most occur because the occupant trips the system and either doesn't know how or forgets to deactivate it before the alarm sounds. Another cause is equipment malfunction that occurs because the owner doesn't maintain the system adequately. And finally, there are so many radio signals already in a house—from the television to the garage door opener—that those signals may trip a sensor.
According to David Petraglia, an independent home security consultant, the most stable system sends a computerized data word, consisting of 8 to 20 bits of information, to signal alarms. The receiver will respond only if it receives the exact signal it expects. That alleviates a lot of false alarms.
Supervision: Each sensor will occasionally "check in" with the receiver. If a battery is low, a maintenance signal will alert you. Also, if you're home when the alarm sounds, you'll be able to look at the control panel and know just which sensor was activated.
